How it works

To begin, pick the correct category:

  • Free private advert — A free advertisement for private sale items with values up to £250
  • Private advert — A private paid–for advertisement for items valued £251 or more
  • Family announcement — A paid–for advertisement to announce a family event
  • Business & trade advert — Paid–for advertising for all business and trade customers

Then use the easy to follow on–screen instructions to build your advertisement. You will need to indicate: the section you would like to advertise under; and the appropriate classification for your product or service.

Free private/Private customers

Choose the style of your advertisement and the package, before creating your advert. Once you have created your advertisement you can choose the publication date on the calendar.

Trade customers

Choose the style of your advertisement, before building your ad using our online editor. A good trade advertisement will:

  • Have a headline that attracts customers looking for your particular product or service
  • Include current offers or promotions
  • Include a full telephone number with area code (or mobile number), contact details and opening times where appropriate.
Choose the title for publication

You will be asked to select an advertisement package and where you would like to advertise. You can scroll over the circulation map, with readership information for all areas we reach.

Review and Pay

Now is the time to carefully check your information and advertisement is correct. Once you are happy, then proceed with payment. A confirmation email will be sent.

Only advertisements booked up to 12pm (midday) can appear in the Express & Star on the following day. Weekly publications when booked after 11am on a Monday will appear in the following weeks publications (Free advertisements will appear within seven days of your chosen date.)

Once you have registered, you can log in to your account at any time and rebook your advertisement.

Express and Star Advertising Acceptability Guidelines

The Express and Star reserves the right to decline, amend or re-classify any advertising submissions that do not meet our standards of acceptance.

Advertisements that contain fraudulent, deceptive or misleading statements or illustrations. Attacks of a personal nature. Advertisements that are overly competitive or that refer abusively to the goods or services of others will not be accepted.

Offensive to good taste - indecent, vulgar, suggestive or other advertising that, in the opinion of the express and star may be offensive will not be accepted. Advertisements that do not satisfy the code of practice of “legal, decent, honest and true” will not be accepted.

Advertisements should include only standard abbreviations and require correct punctuation. Similar adverts appearing frequently over a period time will be scrutinised to ensure that relevant private or trade rates are being applied.

The Express and Star reserves the right to exclude classifications deemed unsuitable. A full list of these is available on request.

Express and Star Advertising Deadlines

Place your advertisement prior to midday for appearance in the next days Express and Star. Please note that in exceptional circumstances the Express and Star reserves the right to delay the insertion date.

Free advertisements are published within 7 days of receipt.

Advertisements for weekly publications will appear in the next available issue.

Do I need to register?

You do need to register to book an advertisement using Book an ad, The account management section also allows registered users to view their bookings, repeat previously booked advertisements, make amendments to future classified bookings and speeds up the booking process

If you have never advertised with MNA before you will not have an advertising account. Registering for an account is simple via the Registration page, simply click on Register now on the homepage and fill in the form. Once registered, you will be able to start booking advertisements and have access to all options within the account management section (see My Account).

How do I login?

On the homepage, enter your username and password in the fields provided. They must be repeated exactly as you entered them during registration, including the same use of upper and lowercase letters.

Select Forgotten your username or password, on the homepage, then please submit your email address or user name. You will receive an email containing your username and password reset link

I need to change my profile

Log in via the homepage as normal and select the My Account tab at the top of the page. Within your account management section, select My Profile followed by Edit my details. Edit your details and click save to update your account.

What Makes A good Advert?

A good advertisement will gain interest by ensuring the Headline attracts those in the market for a particular product or service. The advertisement then needs to sell through the use of selling points and benefits (the description). It is important that the advertiser makes it as easy as possible for the reader to respond by including a full telephone number with area code (or mobile number), email and web address and opening times etc. if appropriate.

Problem Booking and Advert

Deadlines vary by publication and day. The system will check your booking automatically against our deadlines before being accepted. If the date you wish to advertise is not available on the calendar, this will mean it is too late to place the booking via the system. You can call ?????????? or send us a message via the Contact us section, to check for availability in our other newspapers.

Can I repeat a previously booked advert?

Yes, you can repeat previously published adverts through the My Account option, found in the My Ads section once you are a registered user

What Kind of image can I use?

You can use photographs and logos in the following file formats: JPEG, GIF and BMP. The image must not exceed 5MB in file size

How much does an advertisement Cost?

The cost of an advertisement is calculated on the selected publication, section, advertisement size/ number of lines, the number of insertions and selected style

How do I pay for an advertisement?

We accept most major credit and debit cards as well as PayPal and Pay point

Problems using the site

If you experience any difficulties using the website, please contact us using the Contact Us section

How do I get a VAT receipt

Users will not automatically receive a VAT receipt. If you require a VAT receipt please contact us via the Contact us section.

Managing your account

Once registered, you can view your booking history via the My Account section. Through this section, you are also able to view, repeat and amend your bookings as well as update your profile

Can I speak to a sales team

Yes. Whether you want to place an order that cannot be booked via self-service or you want to book a publication package that is not available via self-service please call

Other Questions

Bookings may require amending once submitted in order to have them conform to our house style. This may result in a change in the format of your booking so that it meets our house style criteria. This does not occur often and we will contact you if we have to make necessary changes
